When I completed a writing course several years ago, I began seeing the Bible in a different light when reading it. My bible is the KJV, and reading it through the eyes of a writer, I then understood people's complaints that it was contradictory and confusing. Many of the men God chose as secretaries to write His Word were educated and literate. But none of them were schooled in writing books. They're repetitive, often backing up to insert something they forgot, or make a point, and have long sentences that stretch into paragraphs, and, well, become boring in many places. Mix it together with the tongue-twisting archaic English spoken in the 1600s, and you have a form of writing that can often send you to sleep. This is why most people hate reading King James. But when you're searching for treasure, you need a pickax, shovel, and light—in this case, you'd have to either learn Hebrew and Greek. But the simplest way is to buy a Strong's Concordance or download their app from the Google store. Whenever you hear sermons or read spiritual articles/books, there are two ways to determine the truth. Search the bible, and/or ask the Holy Spirit (Acts 17:11, 1 John 5:6b). It is the LORD Who places these articles in my heart, to write about them, and I pray for His wisdom and guidance. The Bible is the world's biggest jigsaw puzzle, so if you want to find the complete picture of whatever story is written there, you must find all the pieces. Another helpful hint in bible study is the "law of first mention." You go back and find when a particular subject is first mentioned in the bible. It's often surprising.

The Gordian Knot

I love reading about the ancient world, and one of the most interesting is the Gordian knot in Phrygia. The people of that region didn’t have a king, so one of their seers came up with a bright idea, and declared that the next man to ride through the gate, on a wagon, would be…

The origins of Halloween

In October 1999 at a small church in Kirbyville, TX, I overheard my pastor and others, discussing what the church should do at Halloween. I told them we shouldn’t celebrate it at all, and recited what little I knew of its origins. They said they’d never heard that Christians shouldn’t participate, and the pastor asked…

WHAT COLOR IS GOD

Exiled to a small island called Patmos, the apostle John hears a voice saying “come up here,” and he’s instantly in heaven. He sees someone sitting on a throne, but doesn’t give us any indication that he knows who it is—we have to figure it out for ourselves as we read on. John said the…

The Christmas Story, or The Birth of Jesus

It all begins with a Jewish priest, Zechariah, who lived when Herod was king of Judea. Zechariah was a member of the priestly order of Abijah. His wife, Elizabeth, was from the priestly line of Aaron. Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God’s eyes, careful to obey all of the Lord’s commandments and regulations. They…

false teaching of the Daniel fast

In 2007, Susan Gregory started a blog about “The Daniel Fast.” In 2010, she wrote a book about it. Joel Osteen came across it, actively proposed it to his church and TV audience. Now, it’s all over the web, and the majority of churches seemingly participate. It’s exciting because it’s one size fits all, no…

Jesus…or Santa?

The internet is bursting at the seams with information justifying the image, belief, or roots/history of Santa. So, I won’t add to it. For those who are born again…you already know Who Christmas is about. But every year, many Christians have Santa alongside the nativity, mixed with their decorations inside and out, on their cards,…
